Selecting The Right Person To Send To Training
We have found the single most important quality is that you send people who are enthusiastic about learning and developing their skills in the field of multimedia processing. Forensic Video Analysis is computer driven and though learning the basics is not difficult, students need to be proficient in a Windows environment. Students are expected to have at least an average skill level with computers such as: creating folders, saving files, navigating through the Windows environment, basic troubleshooting skills, installing software, etc. Basic computer skills are not taught in the Introduction to Forensic Video Analysis.
Students with a continued commitment in this field also is a plus. Those that excel to become Certified Forensic Analysts will be taking additional courses through the LEVA's Certification Program. This investment of time is well worth it since an experienced analyst at this level is worth their weight in gold. They will help your department save money by solving more cases in less time.
Keeping Your Personnel Properly Trained
We recommend each facility always have two (2) persons trained. Having 2 persons trained will allow your agency to do peer reviews, collaborate on cases, and help ensure that you always have at least one person properly trained in case someone moves on.

Do You Have A Patch You Can Bring To Training?
Several attendees from previous classes had taken it upon themselves to bring us a patch from their unit. Proud to have received these gifts, we created a display in our forensic video training lab as a constant reminder of the important work we are doing. If you are interested in having your patch displayed, please bring one with you.

Additional training and a forensic video analyst certification program are available through LEVA.
LEVA training is Not a Replacement for Ocean System Certified Training!
The Ocean System training focuses specifically on how to operate your dTective forensic video clarification system, while the LEVA training covers broader topics such as: The Forensic Mindset, Video and the Law, Digital CCTV Systems, Video Tape Recovery, and Ethics for the Expert Witness.
We recommend you go through both programs if you want to excel in your duties as a forensic multimedia analyst. We also suggest you take the dTective training prior to the LEVA training,
if possible.
The Law Enforcement & Emergency Services Video Association (www.leva.org) is a non-profit organization run by law enforcement for the explicit purpose of training agency video experts. About 50% of the course hours are taught in a hands-on environment in the lab where they use 20 systems. The other half of the course is taught in the classroom and consists of lectures focused on the law, report writing, videotape recovery and SOP development. |
LEVA Training Schedule
LEVA will now confer Certified Forensic Video Technician (CFVT) status on students who have performed video evidence processing for at least one year and successfully complete its three core courses within a six-year period:
- Basic Forensic Video Analysis & the Law
- Intermediate Forensic Video Analysis & the Law and
- Advanced Forensic Video Analysis & the Law.
