How do I use Media Cleaner 5 to convert digital surveillance files to a format Avid can import? Update: For those with Cleaner XL, click here Many times Avid will have difficulty importing digital surveillance files (AVI files, for example) properly. The usual symptom for this is a clip that consists of nothing more than a white box. If this occurs, you need to convert the digital file into a format that Avid can understand. The best tool for this conversion is Cleaner 5 by Discreet. If you have Cleaner 5 and need to convert a file, this article describes how to select the proper settings. Using Cleaner 5 to convert digital surveillance: 1. Open Cleaner and select "open" from the File menu. Browse to your digital surveillance file and select "Open". 2. With the file loaded in Cleaner's project window, right click on the file and select "Advanced Settings"
3. In the Advanced Settings dialog box, select QuickTime CD ROM & Misc, then check the QT Archival option.
4. On the right side, click the "Encode" button. This is where you will choose the codec that you will use to create the new file (probably the most important step). Click the drop down menu labeled "codec" and select "Avid Meridien Uncompressed". This selection will convert your file to a QuickTime file with the Avid QuickTime codec applied. If this codec doesn't work for any reason, use the "Apple Component Video - YUV422" as a backup. Make sure "same as source" is selected for the frame rate (makes a significantly smaller file).
5. Click "Apply" and click the "Start" button in the project window. The Start button will begin the conversion process by asking you where you would like your new file placed. Select the destination for the new file and click "Save".
6. Once the file is converted, it is ready to be imported into Avid. Open your Avid project and make sure a bin is open. Select "import" from the File menu and click the Options button.
7. In the Options dialog box, you can tell Avid whether or not to resize your file (most digital surveillance is a smaller resolution than NTSC video, the typical file size is 320 x 240). Avid does a nice job of resizing the file (better than using the resize tool), so you may want to select that option. Below are the options and their parameters: Maintain, Square - maintains the original resolution (width x height) of the file being imported. Surrounding areas are padded with black. Maintain and resize, Square - Resizes the video to NTSC resolution (720 x 486). If you want your file to be blown up to 720 x 486, select this option. The aspect ratio stays intact when resizing, and areas that would be "stretched" are padded with black.
