How do I highlight or mask multiple subjects using SpotLight?

When using SpotLight, you may have the need to mask or highlight multiple subjects in the same video clip. This can be done, although it must be done correctly to achieve the desired effect. Simply dragging another instance of SpotLight to your timeline will not achieve the desired effect. The correct method is as follows:

  1. Make sure you have two video tracks on the timeline

  2. Copy the clip down to both V1 and V2

  3. Apply Spotlight to V1 and track the person going through the video. (Make sure you have the timeline set to only look at V1, as shown below)

Timeline with identical clip in V1 and V2. V1 is being monitored, V2 is "off".

  4. After keyframing the track, select all keyframes.  (Edit --> Select All)

    All keyframes highlighted

  5. Blur the outside of the spotlight window

  6. Change the timeline to look at V2.  You should see the original non spotlighted clip now.

Timeline with identical clip in V1 and V2. V12 is being monitored, V1 is "off".

  7. Apply Spotlight to V2

  8. Follow Person 2 through the video

  9. After keyframing the track, select all keyframes.  (Edit --> Select All)

    All keyframes highlighted

  10. Make the outside of the spotlight window set to Transparent
